Throughout our festival, there will be myriad events: sessions, guest lectures, workshops, exhibits, performances, dances, roundtable and panel discussions. Issues to be covered therein may include, but are not limited to, race, gender, class, age, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, and religion. These themes are not just academic theories to be studied in the classroom, but rather concrete everyday infl uences that impact our lives. Our festival committee believes that human interaction begins with communication and respect for all.

We are also very pleased that all events are free and open to the communities of Allentown, Kutztown, Reading, and beyond. Kutztown University is dedicated to the education of our students. Yet, we realize that education does not just take place on campus; it is an ongoing process that involves our local communities. So, in addition to the sessions held on campus, to which several other colleges, high schools, middle schools and elementary schools are invited, we also will host sessions in several area locations. This is the third time that we have directed this festival and we have been astonished by the outpouring of interest, volunteerism, and sponsorship that we have received. We would like to acknowledge everyone who has participated either on our many committees or those who have volunteered to lead or host sessions. This ever-increasing level of enthusiasm and dedication has inspired and energized us. We sincerely hope that DiversityFest III does the same for you!

4 To the Kutztown University Community

As you know, diversity is not a platitude here at Kutztown; it is, increasingly, the reality that we all live every day—and we are proud of that fact. Around campus, you will meet more students and faculty of diverse backgrounds than ever before. Our beautiful Multicultural Center offers more programs and services to students each year. New offi ce space for Gay Lesbian Bi-Affectionate Transgendered Questioning (GLBTQ) students is being provided in Old Main. Disability Services is continuing with the DO-IT Prof project, which provides resources that help students with disabilities to succeed.

And, again this year, we celebrate diversity with DiversityFest III. We are fortunate to be part of a region that is rich in cultural arts and   traditions. From Latino to African American to Asian to Pennsylvania German to many more, we are part of a vibrant cultural tapestry. DiversityFest III honors that cultural vibrancy through the arts.

Throughout the festival, we will be offered fi rst-rate performances, exhibitions, and discussions that enhance our perception and appreciation of the human differences that distinguish us and also of the humanity that unites us.

A special thanks is due to all KU faculty and staff who have worked for months to create DiversityFest III. We would suggest that the most meaningful way for each of us to express our gratitude is to attend and enjoy as many of the events as possible.

Disconnects: From Classroom to
Newsroom

Formerly an assistant editor and writer at the Los Angeles Times, and now an associate professor of Journalism, Latin American Studies, and Women’s Studies at the University of Texas, Austin, Mercedes Lynn de Uriarte received her PhD and MA in american studies from Yale University. At the Times, she was responsible for expanding coverage of Mexico and Central America, as well as U.S. minority communities. She publishes frequently in mass media and academic publications. She recently completed a research project funded by the Ford Foundation ($190,000) examining journalism ethics, intellectual diversity and professional development. The 102-page report was released at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. in March.
Her most current book chapters appear in recent anthologies. The latest ones, “A Problematic Press: Latinos and the News” in Journalism Across Culture and “The Color of Voice, The Resonance of Language: Precedents of the Digital Divide” will appear in Learning and Knowledge for the Network Society later this year. She recently released at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., Diversity Disconnects: From Classroom to Newsroom, a report on two years of research funded by the Ford Foundation. “Falling Through the Media Grid,” on Latina invisibility in print and TV media appears in Till Death Do U Part: A Multicultural Anthology on Marriage by Sandra Browning and R. Robin Miller (eds.).

She received the Excellence in Academic Journalism award from the National Association for Hispanic Journalists in 2000 and was named 1998 Hispanic Communicator of the Year, by the Hispanic Link Journalism Foundation. In 1997, she received a Hogg Foundation grant toward production of a Latino USA radio series on Latino children, for which she served as editorial consultant. She was a 1991-92 Research Fellow at the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center in New York and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Social Sciences at Columbia University. She served as the first chair for the AEJMC Commission of the Status of Minorities. She has also received fellowships from the Alicia Patterson and Ford foundations, from the Social Science Research Council and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was a 1986 Fulbright Scholar in Peru, where she taught journalism to both graduating college students and practicing professionals. She has served as a media diversity consultant for newsrooms and foundations. She has been named Woman of the Year by several organizations including the Mortar Board Society. She is bilingual/bicultural, having been born in the United States and raised in Mexico.
At the University of Texas, she developed the first course in the nation to teach non-minority journalism students how to cover under-represented communities. She also initiated a course in Community Journalism which for a decade produced Texas, a publication for diverse voice—the first such publication in the nation produced in a classroom laboratory. Both courses have subsequently been used as models elsewhere. Articles in Texas received the 1996 Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Outstanding Journalism. The publication is featured in the July/August, 1997 Quill Magazine cover story. She has also provided workshops on journalism and press ethics in Latin America.

José Sarria-The Empress is a Man

Drag entertainer and founder of the Imperial Court System, José Julio Sarria, a veteran of World War II, entered gay history in the 1940s when he began to work at The Black Cat bar on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Soon Sarria was known for his innovative renditions of  operas and his reputation for entertainment and performance: drag was born.
Sarria gave the city’s gay community hope with a dash of laughter. His impromptu arias would contain lyrics that warned people of police entrapment schemes if he learned of them. He also coined some of the first known statements to instill gay pride with such slogans as: “There is nothing wrong with being gay — the crime is getting caught” or “United we stand, divided they catch us one by one.” In 1961, Sarria did the heroic deed for which he is best known today: he filed as the first openly gay candidate in the world to run for public office. Although Sarria did not win in 1961, he shocked both the city’s gay and straight communities by garnering a hefty 5,600 votes.
In early 1965, the owners of local gay bars united in forming the Tavern Guild and sponsoring San Francisco’s first large, public drag ball with Sarria heading it up. Over 500 lesbians and gay men bravely crossed police lines and braved floodlights and the flashing lights of police photographers to attend this ball. During it, Sarria was named the “Queen of the Ball.” Always the showman, Sarria stated “they can’t make me a queen, I’ve been one all my life.” So Sarria proclaimed at the ball that he was now an empress. The Tavern Guild continued to draw the city’s gay community together and began to regularly hold events including the annual drag ball. Eventually this ball marked the annual election of a citywide empress who succeeded Empress José I and subsequent Empresses. Evolving out of the Tavern Guild, Sarria developed the bylaws and functions of the Imperial Court of San Francisco, a group that sought, through drag shows and other functions, to raise money for at first primarily gay charities. Eventually the position of emperors and the subsequent male and female lines of assorted princesses, dukes, and countesses were established to run and organize the charitable organizations.
By the early 1970s, the Court system established by Sarria had been franchised to Vancouver, Canada, and then Portland. Over the next 30 years, individual courts answering to the Widow Norton have spread to over 60 courts (some based in cities while others cover whole states or provinces) in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, thus becoming the second largest gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered organization in the world. For more than half a century, José Sarria, the one-time “Nightingale of Montgomery Street,” has nurtured, protected and inspired gay life. Join Sarria as he regales the audience with stories from his fascinating life.

Salome Thomas-EL – I Choose to Stay

Salome Thomas-EL was born and raised in the inner city of Philadelphia and has been a teacher in the Philadelphia School District since 1987. He received national acclaim as a teacher and chess coach at Vaux Middle School, where his students have gone on to win world recognition as Eight-Time National Chess Champions. Armed with only a chess board and a profound belief in their potential, Thomas-EL’s faith and commitment has motivated hundreds of children in Philadelphia to attend magnet high schools, then going on to major colleges and universities.
Thomas-EL, a doctoral student at Lehigh University, has studied in Cambridge and London, England. He has received a “Making a Difference” award from KYW-CBS Television for his commitment to his community and rejection of six-figure job offers from local suburban school districts. He was honored with the Marcus A. Foster Award as the outstanding School District Administrator in Philadelphia. Thomas-EL was named “A Future Black History Maker” by The Philadelphia Daily News and has received the University of Pennsylvania’s distinguished Martin Luther King Award. He has been selected to appear in Reader’s Digest and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,  2002. Thomas-EL recently appeared on the FoxNews cable show “The O’Reilly Factor, C-SPAN Book TV, The Tavis Smiley Show and NPR Radio. Movie and television rights are now in negotiation.
Thomas-EL is married and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and baby daughter. Currently, he is the Principal at John F. Reynolds Elementary School in North Philadelphia and the author of the new book, I Choose to Stay, released in March 2003 by Kensington Publishing. Reynolds is only one block from Vaux, allowing Thomas-EL to continue his life-inspiring chess program there. At Reynolds, he has set in place reading and breakfast programs as well as a Saturday morning tutoring program. As part of his commitment to opening the world up to show his kids that there are other ways to be than those to which they have been exposed, Thomas-EL takes them to visit colleges and then attends their graduations. Reflecting on how it feels to see a young person he has mentored walk down the aisle toward a real future instead of to an early grave, Thomas-EL has said: “I’ve been to too many funerals; I need to go to more graduations.”
